What is the best Miami-Bahamas cruise with kids 9 and 13?

November 3rd, 2009 | by admin |

We want to take a 3-day cruise from Miami to the Bahamas. My husband is nervous about cruising, so I want it to be nice, good food, not a lot of obnoxious drunks, and a lot of activities for everyone. Which is best: Carnival Imagination, RC Monarch of the Seas, or NCL Norwegian Sky? I’ve heard good things about Carnival, but I’ve also heard that the shorter cruises aren’t as nice. True? If you’ve been on any of these ships, please help!

Update: We’re not considering Disney. Since the Disney cruises cost twice as much as the other cruises and don’t leave from Miami, I’d really like to pick between the three lines I’ve mentioned.

Honestly, with kids that age, I would only sail on Disney……There is so much for the kids and parents to do, with no drunks or ridiculous partying. Unfortunately Disney only sails out of Port Canaveral, near Orlando, but it is by far worth the drive or flight from Miami. Whatever you decide, do not sail Carnival, especially not a ship like the Imagination (it is very old, definitely not kid friendly, and the food/service is sub par).

Here’s a rule of thumb when it comes to cruises –the shorter the cruise, the larger the party.

To take kids ages 9 & 13, I would look at brand more than anything. Of the cruise lines you’ve listed I would recommend Royal Caribbean. They have the largest programs on board for children. This will give your kids plenty to do!

If you’re willing to spend the money, I would recommend Disney. They specifically cater to families and there would be lots of other kids to meet and do activities with. And, there is far less chance you’ll get a bunch of drunks on your cruise.

Carnival is generally the cheapest. So, there are lots of kids on their cruises as well. But, the older ships aren’t as well designed as the newer ships. So, they can have limited amenities that the newer ships include these days, including specific areas just for teens and younger kids. The food on Carnival ships isn’t the best. But, it’s okay for the kids, especially things like the 24-hour pizza bar on the Lido deck.

Hi there, I am a travel agent. I guess the best part is that you have decided to take this vacation for you, your husband and kids. Sounds like this may be your first cruise. Carnival is a good choice to start out. If things work out then later book another cruise on another ship. Your kids are 9 and 13. In a few years they will be much older. Sometimes kids don’t like to travel with the parents. So I say get in as much vacation time as a family as possible. When the kids grow up and move out then you and your husband can take on the upscale cruise ships. You can check out cruise prices on my site below.

    Thanks
